Dr. Joung Breaks Down the Process of Dental Implant Treatment at Our Ridgewood Practice
Dental implants are the top choice for tooth replacement. Dr. Joung explains the dental implant process, starting with determining if you are a good candidate for implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots. They are usually made of biocompatible titanium. Our dentists can surgically insert implants through your gums and into your jawbone. Over time, dental implants fuse with your bone and become part of your anatomy. They are then able to support dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Dental implants offer solutions for patients missing just one tooth or a complete arch of natural teeth. Whatever your needs, our dentistry practice can provide you with a beautiful, functioning smile.

Traditional Dental Implants
Traditional implant dentistry involves placing an implant where there used to be a tooth root. The process requires two oral surgeries. The first oral surgery places the implant, with a second surgery later to place the abutment. If you lack sufficient jawbone density, you'll need an additional preliminary grafting surgery.

All-on-4® Dental Implants
All-on-4 dental implants are designed to support a full denture for people missing most or all of their teeth. With All-on-4, the implants are placed in a single oral surgery, with no need for separate abutment placement. Only four implants are used, strategically placed in order to make the most out of the patient's jawbone structure (bone grafting is usually not required).
Faster, Smaller Alternatives Additional Types of Dental Implants
Alternatives to traditional dental implants can provide patients with quicker treatment timelines, improved eligibility, and include:
Immediate Load Implants
Immediate load dental implants allow our dentists to place a temporary restoration following implant placement. This provides you with a restored smile in a single appointment. The temporary restoration will be switched out for a permanent crown once the healing process is complete. While immediate load implants are a quick way to fill the gap in your smile, they are reserved for patients with good jawbone density.
Mini Dental Implants
Much slimmer than traditional implants, mini implants require less-invasive surgery and are typically used to stabilize a set of lower dentures. Mini implants are a good option for you if you are missing most or all of your teeth and have low jawbone density. It is important to keep in mind that because of their size, mini implants cannot withstand the same biting forces and chewing pressure as traditional implants.
Step-by-Step: From Implant Placement to Final Restoration
The traditional dental implant process from beginning to end lasts about four to seven months. Here is an overview of the important steps in the treatment process:
You'll only have to visit one practice for the entirety of your implant treatment. We are able to complete each stage in-house.

Multiple Missing Teeth
Dental implants can also secure a dental bridge in place. Implant-supported bridges are a great solution for patients who are missing two or three adjacent teeth because they require no modification to your surrounding teeth, allowing you to keep your smile as healthy and whole as possible.
Full Arch
If you are missing one or both dental arches, our doctors can design implant-supported dentures that look and feel natural when you smile, speak, or chew. Unlike removable dentures, implant-retained dentures are fastened to your jaw bone at all times, eliminating the risk of slipping or clicking.
Implant-Supported Bridge
To determine whether you are a candidate for an implant-supported bridge, crown, or denture, our team will carefully evaluate your medical history and your overall health. For optimal results, we will address any underlying medical conditions before proceeding with your dental implant treatment. We may also request x-rays or 3-D scans for a detailed image of your jaw. These scans will help us to assess the structure of your smile and design a customized, comprehensive placement strategy. You may be a candidate for dental implants if you:
Missing One or More Teeth
Dental implants can be used to support a crown, bridge, or denture, so they can address any number of missing teeth.
